Ayurvedic Spiced Chai Tea

Description

Now that the weather has finally turned crisp I’ve been craving (and devouring) the spicy-warm-deliciousness of a homemade chai latte. I’m careful about my caffeine consumption these days so I’ve adapted traditional chai recipes to use decaf Rooibos tea and oatmilk (because aren’t we all on an oatmilk kick these days?). Rooibos tea is an herbal tea from South Africa that is said to have 50% more antioxidants than green tea or matcha.  Its health benefits coupled with a slightly sweet taste has me hooked.  To add more spice, cut back on the coconut sugar and add more fresh ginger or the opposite for a sweeter variation.

The warming blend of Ayurvedic spices in this beverage support digestion, detoxification and immunity.  I hope you sip on this as often as I do!

Scale

Ingredients

4 cups water

1 cup oat milk (feel free to swap for your nut milk of choice)

3 tbsp Vanilla Rooibos Loose Leaf Tea

2 Tbsp coconut palm sugar

1 tbsp fresh ginger, chopped.

1 cinnamon stick

5 crushed green cardamom pods

2 whole cloves

1 tsp coriander powder

1/2 tsp fennel seeds

5 crushed green cardamom pods.

1 cinnamon stick

1 whole star anise

dash nutmeg

Instructions

In a small saucepan bring the water to a boil. Add all of the spices and let them simmer for 10-15 minutes. Add in the loose leaf tea, coconut palm sugar and oat milk and bring back to a boil. Simmer uncovered for 7 minutes. Remove from heat, strain and enjoy!
